Mary Kate Johnson Clarkson
Mary Kate Johnson was born on May 28, 1888 in Corsicana, Texas to Dr. Samuel Wistar Johnson and Mary Kate Beaton Johnson. She was the granddaughter of Alexander Beaton and Elizabeth Jane McKinney, and the great granddaughter of Hampton McKinney and Mary Banes Clark, the first family to settle the land in Navarro County that Corsicana would be built on. She lived in and attended school in Corsicana until she was twenty four years old and married her husband of 40 years, Wiley Gulick Clarkson, in 1912. After their honeymoon in New Orleans, they moved to Fort Worth, where her husband had partnered with a Fort Worth architectural firm and would become one of Fort Worth’s leading architects. In 1917, she gave birth to her only son, Wiley G. Clarkson Jr. One of the homes most connected to her husband in the first twenty years of his career was a home built in the historic home addition of Ryan Place. Her husband designed and built the house at 2517 Ryan Place as a Christmas present to his wife. She was a house wife her whole life, supporting her husband in whatever capacity needed. When her husband passed away in 1952, she continued to live in their home at 1417 Hillcrest until her death on Nov. 18, 1974. She is buried next to her husband in Greenwood Cemetery, Fort Worth, TX. She was a member of the Fort Worth Woman's Club from its earliest days, a member of the First Methodist Church of Fort Worth whose church building was designed by her husband, and a member of River Crest Country Club.
