This is an article which named a recipient of a "Vernon "Turk" Bowman Award" to a senior on the AHS boys' golf team who exemplified integrity, honesty and respect for the game of golf. This award was named in honor of alum Vernon "Turk" Bowman who was a golf icon in the community. Bowman and a group of friends, started the first Ames High boys' golf team.
Each year, golf coaches and members of the golf team would select a teammate to receive the award. The name of the recipient with a plaque is awarded at the team's banquet at the end of the season. His name would then be displayed in a trophy case located int he new high school addition.
