Governor General of Australia (1953-59). Took command of the 14th Army in Burma in 1943, later becoming commander of the Allied Land Forces and then Commandment of the Imperial Defence College. Succeeded Lord Montgomery as C.I.G.S., 1948-52. Also served as Governor and Constable of Windsor Castle.
