Captain Gilbert Hart was the son of Irad and Lucinda (Wright) Hart. His grandfather was Amasa Hart who was born in Wallingford, CT and went to Wallingford, VT before the Revolution. He was the captain of Company H of the Second Regiment of United States Sharp-shooter for three years in the war of the Rebellion or the Civil War. In 1865 he moved to Detroit, MI, where he became the inventor of the Hart-Emory Wheel and made a fortune with this invention. In 1894 he sponsored the construction of the library that bears his name in Wallingford, VT.
