Lifelong Anchorage resident Jeff Simmons, 17, died of muscular dystrophy Aug. 22 at Providence Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. John United Methodist Church with the Rev. Howard Devore officiating. Jeff was born April 29, 1976, in Anchorage. He would have been in 11th grade this fall at Dimond High School and had been on the National Honor Society. His hobbies included video games, collecting comic books, watching movies, especially Star Wars, visiting Disneyland and other theme parks, listening to music and traveling the bike trails. His family said: "Throughout his life, Jeff bravely battled muscular dystrophy. Despite its physical limitations, he always lived life to the fullest. Jeff was a loving son and brother, and was most happy when doing activities with his family. His brothers were his best friends. All those who loved Jeff can take comfort in the fact that Jeff is now free." Jeff is survived by his parents, Don and Lynda, his brothers, Keith and Drew, his paternal grandparents, Olen and Gladys, all of Anchorage; his maternal grandparents, Claude and Velva Wheeler of Creedmoor, N.C.; and his uncles and aunts, Craig and Lisa Simmons, Claudia Skorupski, all of Anchorage, Cherri and Dave Rockwell of Pittsburgh, Cam and Linda Wheeler of Raleigh, N.C., and Bobby and Debbie Wheeler of Creedmoor. The family requests that memorial donations be sent to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Alaska Chapter, 1838 W. Northern Lights Blvd., Anchorage 99517.
