Jefferson City News-Tribune (MO) - Sunday, October 14, 2007:

Mr. Francis Joseph Sweeney, age 76 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Thursday, October 11, 2007, at the Adams Street Place. Francis was born November 3, 1920, in Moberly, Mo., the son of Michael D. and Gertrude Jacobi Sweeney, both deceased. He was married on November 14, 1945, in Jefferson City, Mo., to Adelia Movelle Hawkins, who preceded him in death on October 16, 2006.

A lifelong resident of the Jefferson City area, Francis graduated from St. Peters Grade and High School.

He entered the United States Army Air Corps on December 26, 1941. He served his country during World War II in England, Australia, and New Guinea until his discharge in May 1945. After World War II, he worked for Hager Standard Station. He owned and operated Sweeney Standard Station and was an independent bulk oil distributor for Standard Oil Company. He also worked for the Missouri Dept. of Revenue and the Exchange National Bank prior to his retirement.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and the American Legion, Roscoe Enloe Post 5.

Survivors include: one daughter, Doris Marie Brendel and her husband Ralph of Jefferson City, Mo.; one granddaughter, Michele Lynne Bailey of Jefferson City, Mo.; and one great-grandson, Andrew J. Bailey of Jefferson City, Mo. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Hortense Meyer and Mary Lucy Kline Otke; and one brother, William D. Sweeney.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Monday, October 15, 2007, in the Freeman Chapel with the Reverend Patrick Dolan officiating. Graveside services and interment with military honors will be conducted at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be at Freeman Mortuary from 9-11 a.m. Monday. Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Father Flanagan's Girls and Boys Town, P.O. Box 7000, Boys Town, Nebraska 68010; The Carmelite Monastery, 2201 West Main St., Jefferson City, Mo. 65109; or the charity of their choice.
