Brother Johann Jakob Batt, was born on the 10th of Feb. 1867 in Brunnenthal, Russia and died Nov. 6, 1939. In 1886, he married Katharine Elizabeth Propp. In the same year they came to America and lived almost exclusively near Marion. The Lord blessed their marriage with six children, three sons and three daughters who are still alive.

In 1904 he became a believer in Jesus and was baptized by means of the death of Jesus by Brother Jakob Ehrlich. They belonged to the congregation in Strassburg until the family moved into the city of Marion in 1914 and transferred to the congregation there. Our Brother was a faithful worker in the parish and was friendly when dealing with people. He served the parish in various ways with faithful devotion. Two weeks before the Lord called him home, he was teaching his class at Sunday School. Brother Batt was a good friend of the pastor and always stood up for the rights of the parish and n doing this, he often set his own personal wishes aside. His departure left a hole in the parish which will not be easily filled.

A month ago he received an operation which did not help his condition. Nevertheless, he went back to his work until about two weeks before his death. At this time his condition worsened and the Lord alleviated his extreme suffering. He was thus allowed to see the one in whom he believed and whom he served.

Besides the deeply grieving widow and his six children, he leaves behind nine grandchildren, one brother and many relatives. Brother Nebe and the undersigned spoke at the grave side funeral. The large attendance and the money spent on the many flowers serves as proof of how highly our brother was looked upon by the whole community. May the gracious Lord be near to the grieving ones.
