John ["Jan"] was the third of four children { three sons & a daughter} born to George & Mary (Mleziva) Stangel.

About 1854, John married Dorothy Pelnar in Luzene, Bohemia; he was age 23, she was 22. According to a Stangel Family History, John came to America from Bohemia in 1856.

From his obit, published in Der Nord Westen on 12 March 1908: "John Stangel, one of the old pioneers of Town Mishicott, died Sunday of old age debility. Stangel was born 77 years ago in Bohemia and came to Mishicott in 1856 where he established a farm on which he resided ever since. He leaves 8 children."
