Nancy Catherine Bennetch, 89, of 117 Quaker Drive, Hegins, passed away Wednesday at her home.
Born in Richland, January 25, 1924, she was a daughter of the late William and Margaret Bollinger Steinbach.
Nancy entered the Army Nurse Corps on May 15, 1945, after completing her nurse's training at the Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing. She was honorably discharged Dec. 18, 1951.
Nancy served in Japan during its occupation. While there, she served in the Osaka Army Hospital and traveled to various outposts to immunize the troops. After returning stateside, she served at the Valley Forge Army Hospital caring for German War prisoners and soldiers. Nancy attained the rank of Captain and received the World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with "Japan" clasp and Korean Service Medal.
After her separation, Nancy worked at the Lebanon Veterans Hospital from 1953 to 1957.
She was married in 1957 and then became a full-time housewife and homemaker. For over 50 years she was a dedicate dairyfarmer's wife.
She was a former leader and served on various councils and committees for the Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council. She was also a member of the Elco Womens Club and Society of Farm Women Group 9.
Nancy was a member of St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, Schaefferstown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marlin E. Bennetch; an infant son, Andrew; and a brother, John W Steinbach.
She is survived by a daughter, Margie Smeltz and her husband, Gary, Hegins; a son, William Bennetch and his wife, Donna, Millbach Springs; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
