Russell Lawrence Barrett Jr., 81, of Dayton, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

He was born Oct. 24, 1931, to Russell and Lucille Mae (Wadding) Barrett, in Milton, Pa.

On June 11, 1955, he wed his loving wife, Gwen, to whom he was married for 58 years.

In 1955, Russell joined the Navy, where he served on the USS Bexar (troop transport) for two years. Russell enjoyed a life in the Dayton area farming, trucking and surface mining, from which he retired in 1995, still carrying on his passion for farming and raising cattle. Russell and Gwen enjoyed helping others and have traveled to Jamaica, St. Kitts, Guatemala, Honduras, Haiti, Panama '79, Panama '99, Costa Rica and San Blas Island. Russell and Gwen also frequented many local churches over the years. Gwen played both the piano and organ, putting Russ in charge of her music case, which he carried faithfully every Sunday.

Russell is survived by his wife, Gwen; son, Russell Ray (Luann) Barrett, of Dayton, Pa.; daughter, Jana (Mark) Goldinger, of Dayton, Pa.; grandson, Nathan (Amy) Barrett; five granddaughters, Jasa (Jacob) Wolfe, Kristin (Cory) Rosensteel, Janel (Wade) Bowser, Larin (Ryan) Bowser and Leah Barrett; great-grandchildren, Brook, McKinely, Kise, Killian, Chase, Calder, Rowan and awaiting baby girl Lydee Jo; brother, William (Jane) Barrett, of Smicksburg; and brother-in-law, Don Harkleroad, of Dayton, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Maxine; two brothers, Richard and Edward Barrett; and a grandson, Justin Goldinger.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at CARSON/BOYER FUNERAL HOME INC., 724 W. Main St., Rural Valley. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013, in Dayton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Howard and the Rev. James Swogger co-officiating.

Burial will take place in Milton Cemetery, Wayne Township.
