Harold lived his early life in the Meade Co. community of Plains, KS, and received his basic education in the Plains public school system. He attended Southwestern College at Winfield, KS and received his A.B. degree in 1932 after an interruption for teaching at Byers, KS from 1929-30. After receiving his degree, he taught at Moscow, Copeland, and Plains, KS before coming to Russell in 1938.
Harold married Edith Mildred Dellinger June 4, 1935 at Pratt, KS, and this union was blessed with two children, Joan and Don.
Harold's teaching and administration career was greatly varied during his year in the Russell School System. He not only taught a variety of academic classes, but his coaching career brought to Russell the first state basketball championship in 1949, with a successful season of 27 straight winning games. After his retirement from coaching, Harold was a Junior High School Principal, Director of Elementary Education, as well as Principal of Dorrance High and Grade Schools in USD 407, before he retired from his teaching career in 1974. During his career, he advanced his education with graduate courses at Colorado U. of Boulder, CO and Colorado State College at Greeley. He received his Master's degree in Education Administration at Greeley in 1952. He was honored with membership in Phi Delta Kappa fraternity.
He was active in the Trinity United Methodist church of Russell, the National Retired Teachers Assoc., Russell Co. Retired Teachers Assoc. and the KS Nat'l Education Assoc., as well as being a long-standing member of the Russell Kiwanis Club.
Survivors are his wife, Mildred of the home; son, Don of Carrollton, TX; daughter, Mrs. Alvin (Joan) Rusk, Marshall, MN; 3 sisters, Harriett Ames, Wichita; Helen Phalp, Aurora, CO; and Maxine Hale, LaMarque, TX; 4 grandchildren and one gt. grandchild. Other survivors are three sisters: Mrs. Robert (Harriett) Ames of Wichita; Helen E. Phalp of Aurora, CO; and Maxine Hale of LaMarque, TX; cousins Jack Elliott of Plains, KS; and Sam Elliott of Bartlesville, OK.
