Hitler's Valet - Junge was the epitome of the Nordic man: tall, strong facial bones, blonde and blue-eyed. He applied for membership in the SS in 1933 and after a through physical and check of his background (criminally and genealogically - finding no Jewish ancestors) was accepted. In 1934 he volunteered for the 1st SS Division Leibstandarte-SS Adolf Hitler. In 1936 he joined Hitler's escort commando of bodyguards and in 1940 Junge became a valet and orderly and aide-de-camp to Hitler. While serving in this role, he met Gertraud "Traudl" Humps, one of Hitler's personal (last and most well-known) secretaries. Reportedly, Hitler recommended to couple they marry and on 6/19/1943, they did. The ceremony was witnessed by Hitler's primary chauffeur and chief of his car fleet, Erich Kempka and fellow aide-de-camp Otto Günsche. Junge applied for duty on the front lines but was continuously refused. But approval was finally given and he was assigned to the 12th SS Panzer Division Hitlerjugend (Hitler Youth). Now a SS-Obersturmführer, Junge was killed in action when the area he was serving in was attacked by low-flying aircraft four days after the invasion of Normandy by Allied forces. The news reportedly was given directly to Hitler as he had been fond of his young valet. It has been reported by several sources that Hitler himself, broke the news to Traudl of her husband's death. Junge is buried at the German War Cemetery at Champigny-la-Futelaye, France. He shares a monument with an enlisted man, Obergefreiter (Lance Corporal) Ewald Hahn.
