John was the son of Robert J. and Rhoda Catherman Hartley. He married Florence V. Barnes from Susquehanna County and he was a self-employed electrician. He also farmed on a farm just outside Winfield, Union County, Pa. John was the father of 6 children as follows: Steven, Nancy, Rebecca, Linda, Annie, and Susan. John generously donated the land on which is located the Winfield Baptist Church. In 1973 John was involved in a motor vehicle accident in which he was mortally injured and he died shortly after the accident , in the Geisinger Hospital, Danville Pa.
