Shawnee resident Victor H. Rushing, 80, died Sunday, Sept. 18, at Oklahoma Veterans Center in Norman.

He was born Sept. 6, 1925, in Shawnee to Ernest Rushing and Mae (Robison) Rushing.

He received his GED after returning home from the war. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a tail gunner in a dive bomber off the USS Saratoga Aircraft Carrier in the Pacific.

On Aug. 30, 1943, he married Rebecca Chambers in Shawnee. They were married 62 years.

He worked for Rock Island Railroad for 23 years as an agent telegrapher. He later worked for the Association of American Railroads in Houston, Texas, for 16 years, where he retired. Upon retirement he returned to Shawnee, where he spent the last years of his life.

He was of the Baptist faith as well as a member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, walking and playing with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca, of the home; one son; James Rushing and wife, Karen, of El Reno; one daughter, Vicki Trent and husband, John, of New Orleans, La.; five grandchildren, Jason Trent and wife, Teri, of Kansas City, Mo., Daron Trent and wife, Traci, of Lawrence, Kan., Dori Kelly and husband, Frank, of Dublin, Ireland, Tara Rushing of Oklahoma City and Lance Rushing of El Reno; two great-grandchildren, Carson Trent of Kansas City and Julien Kelly of Dublin, Ireland, two brothers, Ernest and Florence Rushing of Daytona, Fla., and Richard Rushing of Lancaster, Calif.; one sister, Muriel Cleary of Novi, Mich.; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Gene Norton of Shawnee; and several nieces and nephews.

Service will be 2 p.m. today at Fairview Cemetery Pavilion with John Trent officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Gaskill Funeral Home. Funeral honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy
