Mr. Newkirk, 80, of Adams, a retired farmer and construction worker, died Saturday (Sept. 19, 1998) at Mitchell County, Iowa, Regional Health Center.
He was born Nov. 6, 1917, in Dexter. On Nov. 6, 1937, he married Dorothea Lavine Salisbury in Elmore, Minn. They lived in the Lyle-Grand Meadow-Dexter area until 1959, when they moved to Adams. Mr. Newkirk farmed and worked construction for Brogan Construction Co. until becoming disabled. His wife died May 9, 1992. He was a lifelong member of Dexter Methodist Church. Also he was a member of Cedar Valley Engine Club, restored engines as a hobby and raised rabbits.
Survivors include three daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Harlan) Boe of Le Roy, Sharon (Mrs. Arthur) Osmundson of Adams and Patricia (Mrs. Ernest) Leonard of Houston, Texas; two sons, Roger of Grand Meadow and Ronald of Austin; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucille (Mrs. Loren) Brinkman and Dorothy Schloo, both of Austin. He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and a grandson.
Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Adams Funeral Home and an hour before the service Tuesday at the church.
