MANSFIELD: HERBERT HART knew that the difference between a successful person was not lack of strength, nor knowledge, but lack of will. Strong willed, confident and yet humble, Herbert's life was a success story. A gifted athlete, loving husband, father and grandpa, and authentic teacher and coach, Herbert cast a positive influence over countless lives.

On Monday evening September 30, 2013 Herbert Harold Hart of Mansfield, finished his race and kept his faith. He peacefully passed away at home surrounded by his loving family. Herbert was 84.

The son of Glenn and Carrie (Hollenbaugh) Hart, Herbert was born December 14, 1928 in Shelby. At the young age of 15, Herbert first met Veronica Davies. The two were married on August 6, 1949 in Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Life companions and best friends, little did Herbert and Veronica know that their love and commitment would span almost 70 years!

A natural athlete, Herbert was a three sport star, playing football, basketball and baseball for the Shelby Whippets. Continuing his education and athletics at Ashland College, Herbert was a successful student athlete. While earning his Bachelor's Degree in Education he also excelled at football, basketball and baseball.

Joining the Navy, Herbert served as a hospital corpsman aboard the aircraft carrier USS Boxer. He was honorably discharged in 1948.

In 1953 he began teaching and coaching basketball for Willard High School. Building the basketball program from the ground up, Herbert was instrumental in building the basketball gymnasium and also coached Willard to their first outright NOL Championship.

In 1963 he moved his family to the Madison school district where he taught health and continued coaching men's basketball and football for Madison. Herbert demanded 100% from his players and coached many successful teams at Madison as well. He retired in 1982.

Having a genuine love for sports, Herbert also refereed basketball and football games and was invited to umpire a state championship high school baseball game as well.

Although passionate about sports, Herbert's greatest accomplishment was that of devoted husband, dad and grandpa. Herbert couldn't be happier when surrounded by his family. A pillar of support, he provided wisdom, guidance and most importantly unconditional love.

Enjoying the outdoors, Herbert loved to hunt pheasant and would fish anywhere he could catch walleye and perch. Herbert was a member of the Sons of Herman, and St. Mary of the Snows Catholic Church.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife Veronica Hart of Mansfield; seven children and their spouses, Larry and Pam Hart of Mansfield, Leon and Bonnie Hart of Ashland, Kentucky, Louis and Diane Hart of Mansfield, Leroy and Sum-Mi Hart of South Korea, Linda and Michael Riley of Los Angeles, California, Delores and Larry Boals of Mansfield, and Lorraine and Doug Swanger of Mifflin; 12 grandchildren; 7 step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his grandson Jarrod L. Maynor; three siblings Robert Hart, Delores Swank, and Larry Hart; half-sister Nina Schull.

The family will receive friends Thursday, October 3, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. in the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where vigil services will begin at 8 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be offered Friday at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Snows Catholic Church, 1630 Ashland Road, Mansfield, Ohio, 44905.
