From the ANCHORAGE DAILY NEWS, August 22, 2005:

Longtime Anchorage resident James Roy Benson, 62, died Aug. 18, 2005, at Providence Alaska Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer.

A visitation will be 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Witzleben Family Funeral Homes, 1707 S. Bragaw St. A graveside service will be at 1:45 p.m. at Fort Richardson National Military Cemetery.

Mr. Benson was born June 25, 1943, in St. Albans, W.Va. He moved to Anchorage in 1977.

He joined the Air Force in 1964 and, after 20 years of service, retired in 1984 as a master sergeant. After his retirement from his military service, he was employed by Lynden Transport, retiring in 1999. He went on to open a local florist business called Blooming Fields. Later, he worked at Northwest Tech until his death.

His family said: "Since 1985, 'Brother Roy,' as he was affectionately called, diligently served as the first head deacon for the Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) in Anchorage. For 20 years, up until his death, Brother Roy dedicated his life in serving our almighty God. As head deacon, he wholeheartedly loved and cared for his fellow brothers and sisters in the Church of Christ. He devoted his time and strength in the performance of his duty, for the benefit of the church. His faithful leadership will be missed, but we find comfort knowing that he finished his race of faith. He was a loving husband and a caring father and found much happiness in watching his grandchildren grow."

Mr. Benson is survived by his wife, Eufemia; son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Marisol Benson; grandchildren, Cedrick, Briley, Steve Jr. and Bryelle; mother, Virginia Benson; brother, Thomas Benson; sister, Sandra Benson Warner; nieces, Susan Barajas and Kristi Warner; and great-nephew, Kenneth John Searcy Jr.

Arrangements were with Witzleben Family Funeral Homes and Crematory.
