d. Pembroke (Maine) 18th inst., Robert LAUGHLIN, age 52. Funeral from his residence on Friday. (St. Croix Courier, January 20, 1876)

In the 1870 U.S. Census, blacksmith Robert Laughlin, 49, born Ireland, was living in Robbinston, Maine, with Bessie P., 40; and Agnes, 16, both born in Canada; Thomas A., 13; Robert S., 9; Mary M., 7; Louis B., 5; and ABBIE H., 2, all born in Maine.

"Originally christened as Abbie Hill, Gail Laughlin's early life and childhood is as inspiring as her crusade for the rights and autonomies of women. Born in Robbinston, Maine, Gail vowed at an early age of twelve to commit her life to the cause of women's emancipation. Today, her life stands as an unflinching account of her tenacious efforts to elevate women's status in male-dominated society. Born as the eighth of nine children, Gail Laughlin's childhood was far from anything momentous. Born to an Irish father Robert C. Laughlin, an ironworker, and Canadian mother Elizabeth P. Laughlin, Gail lost her father when she was very young. The sudden loss rendered Laughlin's family broke and it was only when they shifted to Portland that their fortunes ameliorated." "A native of Robbinston, Abbie Hill "Gail" Laughton was born to Robert and Elizabeth Laughlin on May 7, 1868. One of nine children, she grew up seeing her widowed mother struggle to support the family, and from girlhood, was determined to improve women's opportunities. Her intelligence and ambition made her a high achiever: she graduated with honors from Portland High School in 1886; worked as a bookkeeper while attending Massachusetts' Wellesley College; and went on to earn a law degree from New York's prestigious Cornell University in 1898. At age 30, she opened a New York City office specializing in tariff law." (National Women's History Museum)

In the 1860 U.S. Census, Robert Lauchlin, 39, born Ireland, was living in Robbinston, Maine, with Elizabeth P., 30; and Agnes J., 6, both born in N.B.; Thomas A., 3; and Elisabeth A., 1, both born in Maine.

Robert Laughlin has hauled his shop up to the road lately. I went with the oxen & helped haul it. (Robert Vose Hayden notes, November 1858)

"Alexander T. Laughlin was born at Robbinston, Maine, November 21, 1856, the son of Robert Laughlin, a native of Ireland, who was a shipsmith and who is now deceased, and of Elizabeth Porter (Stuart) Laughlin of New Brunswick, Canada, also deceased.
He received his education in the local public schools and after completing his course at the Pembroke High School..." (Maine Biographies, Excerpted from Maine Sources....)
