The 66-year-old died of natural causes on Oct. 15 at his apartment in Moiliili.
Kaapu, a former gubernatorial assistant, city councilman and, most recently, member of the McCully-Moiliili Neighborhood Board is remembered by his daughter, Carole, as someone who stood up for his convictions.
"When he believed in something, he was very passionate about it," she said in a telephone interview.
Kaapu often talked about how he was raised in a grass house and went on to be the first native Hawaiian to attend Harvard University, Carole said.
Services and visitation for Kaapu have been scheduled for 5 p.m. Nov. 3 at Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary.
Services and visitation will also be held Nov. 4 beginning at 4 p.m. at Kamehameha Schools Bernice Pauahi Bishop Chapel.
Besides Carole, Kaapu is survived by son Kekoa Jr. and sister Kapua Fonoimoana.
