Chester P. “Paul” Scowden, 77, of Delphi, died at 1:15 a.m. March 17, 1999, at St. Elizabeth Health Care Center, Delphi. He had been a patient there since January.
Born Sept. 3,1921, in Americus, he was the son of Noah C. and Ada B. Effler Scowden. His marriage was on Jan. 19, 1946, in Stonewall, Miss., to Jewel Napp, who survives.
Mr. Scowden worked at ALCOA in the extrusion department for 30 years, retiring in 1981. He previously worked at the former Carroll Cleaners in Delphi for four years.
He attended the former Pittsburg School and served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was stationed in Northern Africa, Sicily, and Italy from 1941 to 1945.
He was a member of the Pittsburg Church of the Brethren, the Aluminum Workers Union, and the 25-Year Retirees Club at ALCOA.
Mr. Scowden enjoyed mushroom hunting, gardening, and the outdoors.
Also surviving are three sons, Larry P. Scowden, Robert L. “Bob” Scowden, and Ronald D. Scowden, all of Delphi; three daughters, Joyce Whitman of Delphi, Sandy Harlock of Clinton, Iowa, and Barbara Haber of West Lafayette, four brothers Kenneth “Pete” Scowden of Buck Creek, Charles “Chod” Scowden of Delphi, Robert “Bob” Scowden of Monticello, and Richard “Rick” Scowden of West Lafayette; five sisters, Irma Sprunger of Punta Gorda, Fla., Dorothy “Dot” McCormick of Delphi, Velma Davis of Deerfield Beach, Fla., Helen Michael of Logansport, and Katherine “Kit” Rehwald of Pompano Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister.
