Second Boer War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Southport, England, he was a Royal Mounted Police Sergeant serving in the Strathcona's Horse, Canadian Army. On the July 5, 1900, at Wolve Spruit, about fifteen miles north of Standerton South Africa, a patrol party of thirty-eight troopers came into contact and was engaged at close quarters with a force of eighty of the enemy. When the order to retire had been given, Sergeant Richardson rode back under a very heavy cross-fire and picked up a trooper whose horse had been shot and who was wounded in two places, and rode with him out of fire. For most prestigious gallantry in was awarded the Victoria Cross on September 14, 1900. Richardson was the first soldier to be awarded the Victoria Cross for actions committed while serving with a Canadian unit under British command. He died at age 60 in Liverpool, England.
