Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Morningside, Scotland, he served as a Sergeant in the 2nd Dragoons, Royal Scots Greys, British Army, On October 25, 1854, at the Battle of Balaclava, Ukraine, Sergeant Ramage galloped to the assistance of Private when he saw that he was surrounded by seven Russians. He dispersed the enemy and saved his comrade's life. On the same day, he brought in a prisoner from the Russian line, when the Heavy Brigade was covering the retreat of the Light Cavalry. He also lifted from his horse a Private who was badly wounded and carried him safely to the rear under heavy cross-fire. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross on June 2, 1858. He died at age 32 in Newbridge, Ireland.
