Mary Boone Cate, 82, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, in Macon, Georgia on September 28, 2013. Mary was born in 1930 in Willacoochee, Georgia to Roby and Marie Boone. She was a graduate of Glynn Academy in Brunswick, Georgia and an alumna of the University of Georgia. She received her Master of Education and Education Specialist degrees from Georgia Southern University.

She was married for 63 years to her high school sweetheart, Hollis Lanier Cate. During her 20 year career as a school psychologist in Bulloch County, Mary worked on behalf of children in her community, and was known as a respected and generous mentor to the next generation of educators.

After her retirement in 1992, she and her husband Hollis moved to Fernandina Beach, Florida. She was an avid bridge player; a long time member of the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch and the Amelia Island Newcomers Club; as well as a dedicated volunteer for the auxiliary of the Baptist Medical Center Nassau. She was an active member of Memorial United Methodist Church in Fernandina Beach, where she worshiped for many years. Her greatest joy was spending time with her beloved children and grandchildren at her seaside home, searching for treasures along the beach, and hosting large family gatherings that always included her delectable southern specialties.

She is survived by her husband Hollis Cate of Macon, Georgia, and her five children: Marcie Cate Lancaster of Lilburn, GA, Francie Cate-Arries of Williamsburg, VA, Lanier Cate of Hume, VA, Colleen Cate Etheridge of Macon, GA, and Forrest Cate of Marietta, GA, and their spouses. She is also survived by her sister, Katie B. Brandt of New Orleans, and fourteen grandchildren: Amanda McArthur, Cate Ouzts, Gabriel Arries, Mitchell Etheridge, Allie Lancaster, Nathan Arries, Carly Cate, Hollis Cate, Amelia Etheridge, Austin Etheridge, Caleb Arries, Colin Cate, Cecie Cate, and Leah Cate.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 1, 2013 in the Chapel of Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home, Brunswick, Georgia at 10 AM with a funeral service to follow at 11 AM.
