He was born Nov. 2, 1898 in Rockingham County and was a son of the late Osborn Hamilton and Ida Johnson Smallwood.
Mr. Smallwood had operated the Stop and Shop Superette on North Coalter Street in Staunton from 1956 to 1962.
He was a member of Mount Horeb Presbyterian Church.
In November 1919, he married the former Cora Rosetta Kyger, who died April 12, 1960.
Surviving are a son, Charles E. Smallwood of Grottoes; two sisters, Cora Craig of Mount Crawford and Ida Curry of Grottoes; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Lindsey Weyers Cave Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert R. Clark Jr. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery at Mount Meridian.
The family will receive friends 7:30-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
