Death Of Old Soldier.
Captain M. J. Chamberlain of Butte died Friday at the Soldiers' home, Columbia Falls. He was 62 years old and leaves a widow and three children, who reside at 1115 West Park street, Butte. Captain Chamberlain was born in New Hampshire and served through the war of the rebellion with the 14th regiment of the New Hampshire volunteers. He came to Butte in 1888 and for years was engaged in mining. For a long time he was superintendent of the Boston & Montana company and for years was well known and popular. He was also prominent in local politics and particularly so during the contests over the permanent location of the state capital, in which he advocated the claims of Anaconda. He also served several terms as a school trustee on the old Trask board 8 or 10 years ago, during the exciting times of the Riely administration of the affairs of the schools. His position on the capital question was in opposition to some of the higher officers of the Boston & Montana company at that time, which led to his resignation as superintendent. Since then he has been engaged in mining on his own account, mostly as a leaser, and with only moderate success. For several years his health has been failing and he was finally persuaded by some of his old comrades to go to the Soldiers' home and he was admitted to that place three months ago.
