OBITUARY: Sandersville Progress, Sandersville GA, Jun 9, 1938 (Thurs) Headline: Charles S. May Dies of Wound
Sub-Headline: Prominent Farmer Passes Away at His Country Home

Relatives and friends of the May family were shocked Saturday morning when it became known that Charles S. May, aged 56 years, whose home is on the Warrenton road, a few miles northwest of Warthen, had died from the effect of a shot gun wound. The wound was apparently produced by accident, according to the verdict of a jury impanelled by Coroneer W. L. Peavy to investigate the cause of death.

Mr. May was alone in a room at his home when members of the family heard the shot and ran to the room to see what was the cause of it. The charge from the gun produced instant death. Members of the family stated that he had planned to have a team hitched up to do some farm work, expecting to supervise it. He was a prosperous farmer and his financial condition was reported in good shape, as he
had money to lend to others who needed it.

Mr. May was a son of the late Kinch May and Sallie Hattaway May, who were well known citizens in that section of the county.

He was a member of the County Board of Education, having been chosen for this position at the March term of Washington Superior Court by recommendation of the grand jury. He was also a member of the County Welfare Board.

Mr. May is survived by his widow, formerly Miss Maybelle Rachels; seven children, Mrs. Nelson Glover, Mrs. Arthur May, Hoke May, Wayne May, Frances May, Paul May and Carolyn May; and eight brothers and sisters, Grover May, Carlie May, Gordon May, Jewell May, Mrs. A.T. Amerson, Mrs. David Walker, Mrs. German Murphy, and Mrs. Eugene Wilson.

The funeral and burial took place Sunday afternoon at Pine Hill Methodist Church, located in that section of the county where he had spent his life, the services being conducted by Rev. E.R. Cowart of Mitchell, assisted by Rev. W.B. Taylor of Davisboro. The Sandersville Undertaking Company was in charge.
