While still living at home and unmarried, Richard, 23, was required to register for the draft during the war. He did so on June 5, 1917. His home address on his registration card was 192 Pearl Street in Gardner. He reported that he was a silversmith and that his employer was "The Blanchards". The registrar described him as tall with a slender build with both brown eyes and hair.
