OBITUARY:

Edna Mae Dix, 85, of North Asheville died on Thursday September 26, 2013 after a long illness. She was born in Scarbro, West Virginia on April 18, 1928. She was the daughter of the late Jonathan and Evelyn Brabban. She worked for a number of newspapers, including the Post Herald in Beckley, West Virginia, her hometown. She also worked in various editorial capacities for the Johnson City, Tennessee, Press Chronicle; the Fresno, California, Bee; the Idaho State Journal in Pocatello and the Omaha, Nebraska, World Herald, before joining the Call-Chronicle in Allentown, Pennsylvania. In 1955 she was honored as Pennsylvania Newspaper Woman of the Year. She retired after 32 years with the Call-Chronicle as the associate editor of the Sunday Call Chronicle. Her husband, Don, preceded her in death on June 1,1996. She is survived by her neice, Mary Beth Greene; and her nephew, Charles R. Brabban, Jr., both of Sanford , Florida. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, October 1, 2013 in the chapel Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue, with the Rev. Dr. Robert Blackburn, Jr. and Rev. Julie Wilburn Peeler officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum at Lewis Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday September 30, 2013 from 3:00 pm to 4:30 pm at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine; American Cancer Society, Asheville chapter; The Memorial Mission Hospital Foundation, Asheville Foundation, Asheville; The St. Joseph's Hospital; The American Red Cross, Asheville chapter; or the Humane Society of Buncombe County.
