Francis Marion Hartman was born on
February 8, 1872 at Marathon, Clermont
County, Ohio and passed away on July 2,
1927 at Frankfort, Kansas, at the age of
55 years, 4 months and 24 days.

He spent his early boyhood in Ohio but
came to Kansas with his parents in 1885,
attending school at Centralia, Kansas
and later Baker University at Baldwin,
Kansas. In his high school and college
days he was an outstanding athlete and
made several records.

He became a member of the Methodist
Church at an early age. He was also
a member of Frankfort Lodge I.O.O.F.
No. 110 and S.B.A.; also various
newspaper associations of the state for
many years.

He was married to Annie Cook, February
17, 1895 and to this union was born four
children, one of which Francis Marion,
died in infancy.

He spent his whole life in newspaper work.
He ran the Centralia Journal for a year,
when he was elected County Clerk of
Nemaha county in 1896, of which he
served one term, and also continued to
publish the Centralia Journal. At the
expiration of his office he moved to
Eskridge, Kansas, where with the assistance
of his brother, A.B. Hartman published the
Eskridge Tribune for about six years. In
1904 he was associated in publishing the
Vinita, Oklahoma, Chieftan. In 1905 he
came to Frankfort, Kansas and was the
associated with Forrest Warren in the
Weekly Index. They started the Frankfort
Daily Index on February 26, 1906. A few
months later Mr. Hartman purchased
Forrest Warren’s interest in the paper,
and for twenty-one years his name was on
the masthead.

He is survived by his wife, Annie, and three
children, Harold Hartman and Allen Hart-
man, both of Frankfort, Kansas and Mrs.
Fred MacLeod, Lyons, Kansas; two brothers
John B. Hartman, Centralia, Kansas and
Allen B. Hartman, Sand Springs, Oklahoma
four sisters, Mrs. Sam Smith and Mrs. J.R.
Campbell, Vinita, Oklahoma and Mrs. L.R.
Thompson and Mrs. John Curd, Tulsa,
Oklahoma.

Funeral services were held at the M.E.
Church in Frankfort, Kansas on Tuesday,
July 5, 1927 with Reverend L.B. Pruitt
officiating assisted by Reverend J.C.
Dussair.

Interment was in Willow Hill Cemetery,
Frankfort, Kansas.
