The Rev R W Burts Dies Near Honea Path
Services This Afternoon at Broadmouth Church Where He Labored So Long
The Rev Richard W Burts, widely beloved Baptist minister, died at his home near here this morning after an illness of several weeks. The Rev Mr Burts was 87 years of age and had not been in the best of health for some tie past. he was one of the oldest ministers in the Piedmont section and his death has caused sorrow among hundreds of friends throughout this section.
Mr Burts was born in 1833 at Cold Point, Laurens county, the son of Michael Burts and Mrs Amanda Grant Burts. Mr Burts' father was born in 1806. His grandfather was Frederick Burts, who settled in Newberry county before the Revolutionary War. Mr Burts' mother died when he was a small boy.
In 1864 Mr Burts was married to Miss Cornelia Johnson of Abbeville and soon thereafter moved to Florida, where he was engaged in farming. At the outbreak of the Confederate war he enlisted in Company E, Florida cavalry, serving until the close of the struggle. During the war his wife and small son both died.
After the struggle, Mr Burts moved to Abbeville, where he remained for a short time. He married Mrs Amanda Acker Latimer in 1866 and settled in Honea Path. In 1891 his second wife died. He married Mrs Sarah Latimer in 1892.
The Rev Mr Burts was ordained into the ministry in 1870 and retired in 1910 after having served faithfully for 40 years. He was a man of deep convictions and piety. His labor brought forth fruit for the Master at all times. He was a man who had read much and he kept abreast of the times.
During his 40 years of service he had been pastor of Turkey Creek, Fork Shoals, Big Creek, Union, Shady Grove, Little River, Dorchester, Pelzer, Eureka, Barker's Creek, Broadmouth and Honea Path churches. His longest service was with Broadmouth church, having been pastor there for 36 years.
He is survived by several well known sons and daughters. The sons are: The Rev Charles E Burts, D D, general secretary of the Baptist state convention and until recently pastor of the First Baptist church of Columbia; R C Burts, superintendent of the Rock Hill city schools; R M Burts, sheriff of Abbeville county, G L Burts and W L Burts, Honea Path; S L Burts, Atlanta; T H Burts, Laurens. The daughters are: Mrs J B Watkins Jr, Belton; Mrs A G Wood of Williamstom. He also leaves one brother, R J Burts of Honea Path.
Funeral services will be conducted at Broadmouth Baptist church Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment will be in the churchyard.

Dr Charles E Burts of Columbia and Prof. R C Burts of Rock Hill left here early yesterday morning for Atlanta, where they were called late Friday night on account of the death of their brother, Steve L Burts, division traffic superintendent of the Western Union Telegraph company with headquarters int he Georgia capital.
Mr Burts died rather suddenly, shortly after 11 o'clock Friday night, according to the message received here, he having been in apparent good health until Friday afternoon, when he was stricken with apoplexy while playing golf at the country club. he was stricken about 2:30 o'clock and never rallied, passing away at 11:30 o'clock at night.
Mr Burts was well known here, having begun his career as an operator in the local office of the Western Union in 1891. He had made good and was holding a high job with the company at the time of his death. Mr Burts first came to Columbia in 1891 from his home in Honea Path. In 1892 he was transferred to Charlotte as manager of the office there and after a number of years' service in the North Carolina city he was promoted to division traffic superintendent of the southern division with headquarters in Atlanta.
Mr Burts married Miss Lillian Spearman of Columbia and she, one son, Ward Burts, together with a number of brothers and sisters, survive. Among the brothers are Dr C E Burts of Columbia, Prof R C Burts of Rock Hill, former Sheriff Burts of Abbeville and others.
The funeral will be held in Atlanta this afternoon at 3 o'clock and will be conducted by the Rev Ashby Jones, pastor of the Ponce de Leon Baptist church.
