Priscilla Ferguson, formerly of Portland, a resident here since 1989, died Thursday at Knox Center For Long-Term Care after a long illness.

Born in Bath, daughter of Franklin A. and Maude Faulkner Ferguson, she was a graduate of Portland High School. In 1929 she earned an A.B. degree from Boston University and in 1949 completed a master of education degree at B.U. She later attended both Wellesley College and the University of Maine.

Early in her career, Miss Ferguson taught school in Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York and Massachusetts, before returning to Maine to teach in Bath. From 1947 to 1975 she served in the Cape Elizabeth school system as principal of Cottage Farm and Pond Cove schools, Supervisor of Elementary Education and Supervisor of Special Services.

For many years she held a keen interest in Portland theater and participated n many Lyric Theater and Portland Players shows. She was an ardent supporter of the Portland Children's Theater and served one term as president of that group.

Interested in local politics, Miss Ferguson made an unsuccessful bid in 1975 for the Portland City Council.

She volunteered at the Leisure Time Activities Shop and the Victoria Mansion. For more than 28 years she volunteered Sunday evenings at Maine Medical Center's Emergency Room, ultimately accumulating more than 7,000 hours volunteer time.

A longtime member of the State Street Congregational Church, Miss Ferguson was also a member of The Portland Stamp Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the League of Women Voters.

Surviving are a sister, Eleanor Ferguson Whitehead of Chevy Chase,Md.; three nieces, five nephews, 13 grandnieces and grandnephews and a great-grandnephew.

A memorial service will be held at noon Sunday in State Street Congregational Church, Portland. Burial will be later in Evergreen Cemetery, Portland. Arrangements are by Burpee-Strong Funeral Home.
