Katie was born in Kollosomp, Stuhm, Westpreußen, not far north of Marienwerder, now Kwidzyn, Poland. Her family also lived in Oschen, just east of Marienwerder. Her original maiden name was "Scheumanski" and "Schemanski," but was changed in Chicago by her father. She immigrated with her parents Frank Schuman and Anna Gutrich ("Gutzek") in 1872. She married August Gockel on 23 Oct 1895 in St. Anthony's, in Chicago. They had two daughters, Josephine and Agnes.
