Henry Sherman was born in Dedham, Essex, England about 1546 and resided most of his life in that city. He was the son of Henry and Agnes Sherman. His mother's family name was most likely Perpoynt. He married Susan Lawrence in Moze, Essex, on June 14, 1568. Henry's father was a clothier in Dedham, and left his clothier's trade and craft to his son Henry. The clothing trade was one of the largest businesses at that time in England. A clothier was a middleman. He commissioned the shearing of wool, and the carding, spinning and weaving of the cloth, which was usually done individually. The clothier sometimes dyed the cloth and then passed it on to a tailor for the final step in the making of clothing. Henry and Susan had nine children, two that died young, most likely all born in Dedham.

Henry was very successfull and his estate was very large. Henry wrote his will on August 20, 1610, and must have died very soon thereafter. In the will, he names all his sons, his wife Susan, and only names one of his two daughters. His wife's will, written soon after Henry's, does name their daughters, and gives their married names. She also mentions all seven of her sons. Henry doesn't mention it in his will, but certainly he must have been buried in the churchyard of St. Mary the Virgin Church in Dedham.
