Shirley was the sixth of nine children and despite losing her mother at age ten, she managed to pay her way through college earning her nursing degree in 1950.
After the premature death of her husband in 1973, she resumed her career and worked at Sparrow Hospital for over 30 years, integral to the physical rehabilitation department.
Shirley loved sports, gardening, reading, and was a devoted mother and grandmother, always a mentor and encouragement to all.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Marks and sons Timothy and Joseph.
She is survived by six children, Gregory (Linda) Marks, Peg (Kent Tisdale) Marks, James Marks, Jerry (Denise) Marks, Patricia (John) Rock, and Linda (Steve) Trierweiler; 22 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and a special dog, Sophie.
The Memorial Mass was celebrated Tuesday, October 1, 2013 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Portland with Rev. Larry King presiding.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sparrow Hospice or the Ingham Co. Animal Shelter in memory of Shirley.
