Actor. He played authority figures, often imposing, sometimes befuddled, in Hollywood films. Holmes was born in Newark, New Jersey. He made his film debut in 1917 after years on the New York stage, to which he frequently returned. His most notable screen work was done in the last dozen years of his life, including "Boomerang!" (1947), "The Egg and I" (1947), "Kiss of Death" (1947), "Joan of Arc" (1948), "Caged" (1950), "Father of the Bride" (1950), "Rhubarb" (1951), "Sudden Fear" (1952), "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" (1953), and "Sleeping Beauty" (the voice of Stefan, 1959). He was the husband of actress Edna Phillips and father of actors Phillips Holmes and Ralph Holmes, all of whom he outlived.
