Gerald (Jerry) Howard Petersen
was born February 18, 1926. to James
Elmer and Lillian Shaw Petersen in
Newell. IA

He attended school in Newell,
leaving during his senior year to enlist
in the United States Navy on January
2, 1944, in Fort Dodge. He was stationed
at Farragut, ID, and served in
the South Pacific on the USS Sumter.
He was honorably discharged from
the USN Personnel Separation Center
in Minneapolis, MN, on April 23,
1946. Following his discharge he returned
to Newell and finished his senior
year, graduating and receiving his
diploma dated 1944 - with the class he
left behind to serve his country.

On September 14, 1948, he married
Deloris Mae Rouch. They had three
daughters, Bobby Jo, Jerri Le and Lynn
Marie.

Later Jerry married Marylinn
Baedke in Sioux City, on December 28,
1965. She had one daughter, Beth
Lynn. Together, Mary and Jerry raised
four girls. They lived in Newell where
Petersen took a great deal of pride in
his work, enjoying every minute of it.
Peterson, along with his brother, father
and grandfather, built many
homes and buildings in and around
the Newell area. Due to ill health he
was forced to retire irl 1984. Peterson
and his wife moved to their home on
West Okoboji five years ago.

In 1947 he received his pilot's license.
He loved flying, fishing, and
gardening. Petersen was also a member
of Newell Post #193 of the American
Legion, a 17-year member of Royal
Lodge #428, a member of Eastern Star,
and the Experimental Aircraft
Association.

Petersen was baptized in the
Newell United Methodist Church on
March 30, 1968, a member there until
his recent membership to the Union
Memorial Church in Milford, IA.
On April 27, 1989. Petersen entered
the V.A. Hospital in Sioux Falls,
S.D. where he died on May 13, 1989.

Preceding him in death were his
parents and one granddaughter, Wendy
Hogrefe.

Survivors include his wife,
Marylinn; his daughters, Mrs. Jon
Winslow, (Bobby Jo), Jerri Le Baker,
Lynn Marie (Mrs. Norman Hogrefe)
and step-daughter, Beth Lynn Smith;
two brothers, James Elmer, Jr. and
wife, Betty, and William Leonard and
wife, Carol; two uncles, George V. Peterson
and Adelmer Shaw; one aunt,
Erna Lemkuhler; eight grandchildren;
six nieces and nephews and many
friends.
