He may have been born in Canada or possibly France.
His father Benoit was a Sergeant in the Suisse Regiment de Meuron in the war of 1812 who settled in Canada and possibly returned to Europe at some point.
Joseph married a Huron woman named Eunice and moved to New York where many of his descendants live to this day.
