Edmund was the 7th child of 10 children born to Thomas Christian (1787-1856) and Hannah Shipley Cole (1794-1873). He was a medical doctor and in charge of the Michigan State Hospital in Wyandotte, Michigan. He married Mary H. Foster [1831-1914] on April 5, 1855 in Detroit, Michigan.
