2nd wife of Henry Francis BIRD (1853-1936) of Johnson Co., IA, widower of Ella (McCollister) Bird.
Family Lore: "Verona Gilbert's first child, Gertrude, born 14 Apr 1897 when Verona was 18 years old, was fathered by a 'Mr. KELLOGG' of Battle Creek, Michigan who refused to admit paternity. Verona left home to go to Illinois to bear the child in private in order to avoid scandal"
(Mtc DNA tests of a descendant of Verona's child, Gertrude and circumstantial evidence indicates that Verona's child, Gertrude, was likely fathered by Dr. John Harvey KELLOGG owner and operator of the health Spa and nursing school at Battle Creek, Michigan where Verona (Gilbert) Bird and her sister, Lucretia (Gilbert) Glasscock, were working and studying nursing at the time. For an indication of the environment that they might have been working in at Battle Creek during the conception of Gertrude see the Book and movie "The road to Wellville". - WLD).
Shortly following the birth of her daughter,Gertrude, Verona saw an ad for a maid and nanny to care for the five children of a widower, Henry Francis BIRD of Johnson Co., Iowa. She took the job, and they were subsequently married 17 May 1899 at Iowa City, Johnson Co., Iowa. Her child, Gertrude, was given the BIRD surname, and the couple were blessed with six more children: Frances FERREN, David BIRD, Myron BIRD, Homer BIRD, Georgie VALLENTYNE and Milford G. BIRD."
