Lutheran Church--Missouri Synod pastor at Bluff City, Tennessee 1903-1905; St. Joseph, Missouri 1905-1910; Brooklyn, New York 1910-1912. Professor at St. Paul's College, Concordia, Missouri 1912-1921. Professor at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Missouri 1921-1957.

Was on leave from Concordia Seminary to help establish a seminary program for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England 1956-1957.

He died on a train from London to Cambridge, England and was declared dead at Addenbrooke's Hospital.

He held the position of secretary of the LCMS's Western District from 1912 to 1921 and was a member of the LCMS's Board for Foreign Missions from 1921 to 1956. He was a member of the Commission for Lutheran Union from 1923 to 1929 and 1935 to 1950.

He was the editor of "Magazin für evangelisch-lutherische Homiletik und Pastoraltheologie" from 1924 to 1926, "Theological Monthly" from 1926 to 1930, co-editor of "Concordia Theological Monthly" from 1930 to 1938 and managing editor from 1938 to 1949.

He wrote numerous books and articles, his most widely known being a "A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament".
