Services are 1 p.m. Thursday at First Congregational Church, Moline, with the Reverend Lynn Chamberlain officiating. Burial is in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Trimble Funeral Home, Moline. Memorials may be made to Candelighters or to the family for a tree to be planted on Moline's riverfront.
The former Barbara Jean Pherigo was born Jan. 5, 1926, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the daughter of Burnett and Clara (Bailey) Pherigo. She graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1943, and married Howard Eugene "Gene" Shipley June 16, 1946, in Ottumwa. She was employed as a classified staff member at Moline High School for 11 years, retiring in 1980. She previously was a display decorator at J.C. Penney and Sears in Moline.
Barbara's hobbies were arts and crafts, interior design, gardening, sewing, camping, hiking and fishing, and she enjoyed entertaining her family and friends.
Survivors include her husband, Gene; a son, D. Michael Shipley, University Place, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Bruce Meers, Moline; grandchildren, Christopher, Robin and Rebecca Meers, Moline, Shawn and Seth Shipley, Geneseo, and Brynn Shipley, University Place; special friends, Jeanette Lemon and Stan Woods, both of Moline; and twin cousins with whom she was raised in Ottumwa, Lonny and Larry Brooks.
