Edward Bertrand, age 41, father of seven small children, was almost instantly killed when he became entangled in a tumbling machine at the West Kankakee foundry shortly after 8 o'clock this morning. Coroner O. J. Cartier ordered an inquest to be held at 7 o'clock this evening in the Morgan funeral home. Bertrand, who resided on W. Mulberry St., was engaged in oiling the machine and was alone in the room at the time. His clothing apparently became entangled in the large steel rollers and his chest and abdomen were crushed. A pair of glasses which he wore were not even cracked. Fellow workers discovered Bertrand's plight upon entering the room a few moments after he was carried between the rollers. They shut off the power and extricated him, but he was unconscious and died before the ambulance arrived. The machine is used to remove sand from iron before forging. Mr. Bertrand was born November 25, 1886 at Goodland, Indiana. He came to Kankakee in infancy with his parents and has resided here ever since. He is survived by his widow and seven children, the oldest of whom is 15 years of age. He also leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marcel Bertrand of the city; eight brothers, George, Fred, Lewis, Arthur, Mose, Daniel, Maurice and Lawrence; five sisters, Mrs. Adele Naese, Mrs. Agnes Davis, Mrs. Lulu Davis, May and Lucille Bertrand, all of the city. Funeral arrangements will not be announced until after the inquest this evening. The body will remain at the Morgan parlors. - Kankakee Daily Republican, August 28, 1928.
