Gene Martial Reed died Thursday in a local nursing home.
He was born in Bozeman on Oct. 24, 1927, to Milton "Mickey" and Flonnette (Bell) Reed. He graduated from high school in Bozeman.

Gene served his country in the Navy from 1945 to 1949.

He married Mary Lee Ryan in 1950; they later divorced.

Gene worked for the Anaconda Co.'s BA & P Railway for nine years until he moved his family to Richland, Wash., and worked at the Hanford Complex. He also worked as a bartender and over-the-road truck driver until he retired.

He enjoyed fishing and playing cribbage.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jim and Bill; and grandson, Michael W. Reed.

Surviving family members are his sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Sally Reed, Kevin and Carol Reed, Dan and Robin Reed, all of Butte; daughters and sons-in-law, Lorie and Steve Axelson, Butte, Sandy and Brian Seccomb, Butte, Debbie and Chris Moore, Idaho; grandsons, David and Cody of Idaho; granddaughters, Kimberly Wood, Colorado, Valerie St. Claire, Helena, Kristina, Samantha and Aubrey of Butte, and Ashleigh of Idaho; five great-grandsons; two great-granddaughters; brother, Art Reed, Idaho; sisters, Shirley Zobenica, Butte, Doris Madeen, South Carolina.

Private family services will be conducted.

Memorials may be made to the Butte Emergency Food Bank or to a charity of the donor's choice.
