Vernon was born on May 22, 1922 in Gordon, LA. He served his country with pride as a Marine in the Marine Corps. He was a 5K runner, built boats and cars which he raced, planted huge gardens, was a Golden Glove Boxer and loved a challenge. Vernon was employed as a boilermaker at City Service for 30 years. He was a friend to many people.
Vernon is survived by his wife, one daughter, one son, and one granddaughter. Also survived by one brother, one sister, and many nieces and nephews.
His parents, Jackson Loren Long and Onie Weaver Long; two sisters; and two brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, September 26, 2013 in the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. A military ceremony and final resting place will follow in the Old Ritchie Cemetery in Moss Bluff. Visitation will begin on Wednesday from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM and will continue on Thursday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service.
