WILLIAM W. PUFFER
William W. Puffer, 86, of 1057 East Main St., who retired in the early 1950s after being manager of the Adams Hardware Store on Main Street for 33 years, died Sunday afternoon at Putnam Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
Born in Bennington Nov 10, 1883, his parents were Ira W. and Alice (Cutler) Puffer. He had received his education in Bennington schools and was a Bennington High School graduate. He married the former C. Adele Walker in 1906 in Albany, N.Y. Mrs. Puffer died in March, 1949.
Following his retirement he had owned and operated a small greenhouse, where he had had success many different types of flowers and plants. He also enjoyed all kinds of sports. In his long association at the hardware store, he had come in contact with many in the area and had provided assistance to many a customer.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Francis (Thelma) Eggsware of Bennington; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren, nieces and cousins.
The funeral had been tentatively set for Wednesday at 11 am at Mahar & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. H. Glenn Payne, First Baptist Church pastor, officiating.
Calling hours at the funeral home are tonight from 7 to 9 and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.
Burial will be in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bennington Rescue Squad through the funeral home offices.
