Rufus was the son of Joseph and Ellen Boop Hartley, and had siblings as follows; Isaiah, Levi, William, Sarah, Adam, John, Annie, Clarence S., Elsie, and Mark. He married Verdie Boreman, who preceded him in death in 1943. Rufus and Verdie had l child, a daughter, Ida M., who died at 3 years of age. Rufus loved to fish and hunt. His last year to hunt was the deer season in 1961. He died in October of 1962.
