Edward Newman and Harriet Hubbard were married March 3, 1844 in Windsor with Thomas Boynton, JP officiating. Edward Newman was 37 years old and farming when he registered for the draft in June 1863.

He enlisted in Company H, Vermont 1st Heavy Artillery Regiment on 18 Dec 1863.

According to Surgeon of 1st Vt Arty., C. B. Park, Jr., Pvt. Newman contracted pneumonia in the line of duty by exposure of wet and cold on his way from Vermont to join his Regiment at Fort Slocum, Washington, D.C. He died there in the regimental hospital.
