  A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday for Herbert F.A. Smith, 53, professor of education at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville who died Saturday in Katmandu, Nepal.
  The Rev. James L. Nettleton of Mt. Vernon, former pastor, will conduct the service in St. John's United Methodist Church. Private burial services will be at a local cemetery.
  At the time of his death Prof. Smith was working on an International Development program for the U.S. State Department, an assignment that would have ended Nov. 1.
  His wife, Bettie and son David were with him. Death was due to natural causes.
  He was on the SIU Contract Team Agency for international development and had taught for nine years at SIU Carbondale before coming to Edwardsville Campus five years ago. He and his family lived on Route 5, Park Drive.
  Surviving besides his wife and son David are his parents, the Rev. Robert S. and Dora Fields Smith of Ouyon, Quebec, Canada, two other sons, H. Wesley Smith of DeKalb and Steven W. Smith, Carbondale, three daughters, Mrs. Philip (Gloria) Aylward and Patricia Smith, both of Edwardsville and Mrs. Steven (Judy) Gerlach of Elmhurst, a brother, Arthur Smith of London, England, and two sisters, Mrs. Hubert (Dora) Chicoine of Montreal, Quebec and Mrs. Harold (Mary) Cotton of Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada. There are four grandchildren.
  Prof. Smith received his BA degree at McGill University in Montreal in 1937, his master in education degree in 1941, and Ph.D. in education in 1950, both at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
  He and his wife, the former Bettie Winsor, were married Dec. 28, 1940 at the First Methodist Church in Ann Arbor while he was studying there.
  He formerly taught at Coaticook, Quebec, High School, the University of Illinois Lab School and Mankato (Minn.) State College.
  The author of many books and articles dealing with education, Prof. Smith was also a canoeing enthusiast and had written many articles on that hobby.
  He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, the National and Illinois Education Associations and had been an active member of St. John's Church during his residence here.
  A spokesman for the family said that memorials may be given to SIU Foundation Dr. Herbert F.A. Smith Memorial Fund.
