Mrs. Velma (Webb) Hoffman, 84, of Batesville, formerly of Newport, departed this life on Tuesday, September 24, 2013. She was born June 9, 1929 in Thida, the daughter of Lester and Gladys (Nelson) Webb.

Mrs. Hoffman was graduate of Arkansas Teaching College, where she worked in the kitchen while earning her degree. She taught school in Missouri, Floral, Arkansas, Concord, Arkansas, and Wonderview, Arkansas, later substituting at Newport and Weiner. While teaching Home Economics, she was affiliated with the Future Homemakers of America. She enjoyed gardening and loved animals. Mrs. Hoffman was a member of Faith Baptist Church of Newport.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Luther Stone in 1958; her second husband, William Frank "Bill" Hoffman in 1998; two brothers, Denver and Harold Webb; one sister, Reba Tarpley; and her parents.

Mrs. Hoffman is survived by one son, Basil Stone and wife Ora Belle of Newport; two brothers, Dale Webb of Jefferson City, Missouri and Chester Webb of North Little Rock; three sisters, Mary Etta Gray of Star City, Lorena Sue Paulette of North Little Rock, and Carolyn Smith of Jacksonville; two grandchildren, Travis Stone and Russell Stone; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends may visit at the funeral home Thursday, 5:00-7:00 p.m. Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Friday at Jackson's Newport Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in Brown's Chapel Cemetery at Thida.
