Henry Salzner was in the jail located in Cairo, IL at the time for the death of his wife when news spread of Anna Pelley's murder. At the time a lynch mob had formed to find Anna's alleged killer Will "Froggie" James and had chased Will, Sheriff Frank E. Davis, and a deputy across Southern Illinois. Once the mob caught up with Will James they lynched him in Cairo. Because the mob could not find the alleged second murderer of Anna they stormed the jail and took custody of Henry Salzner. Henry was then lynched by the same lynch mob.
